In the Blackbird author uses melodic material, derived from Slovene folk song with the same title. Main theme is given to the Clarinet. Formally, piece could be divided into three parts, making it three-part song form - which has been seen as the most appropriate. Harmonic language is moving between Messiaen's modal system, Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique and some simplistic harmony.
